IN RELATIONSHIPS disrespect can be more complex. Where some forms of disrespect are more subtle, that does not mean they are less destructive.

Controlling how we react towards someone who is being disrespectful can help us stay in control while helping to break the cycle. We can choose to help diffuse a situation or make it worse.

Kindness always prevails over negativity, just as darkness cannot thrive where light is present. We all need this reminder sometimes and expressing it out loud can be very powerful.

You may find that you are the one being disrespectful after thinking things through. How do you handle that?

Times of change and uncertainty can increase feelings of frustration, helplessness, insecurity, and vulnerability, and can trigger disrespectful behavior. These emotions can surface quickly when families are discussing succession of the family farm or ranch.

IT’S COMMON for families to look to the eldest son; that individual may be either unable, uninterested, or actually a poor choice . . .

It can be easy to fall into the trap of keeping things casual when assigning roles and responsibilities within a family business. This can lead to tasks not completed or, more often, just one or two people doing everything. If management is that important, then the process for selecting the right manager is one of the most important steps in forming, or passing on, a family business, and should not be taken lightly. It can determine the future success in preserving the family’s Ag Legacy, as well as the direction the business will take. The same is true for other leadership positions within the business . . .

Why Don’t Family Businesses Plan for Succession?

Nearly everyone will recognize the importance of a succession plan for successfully transferring a business to the next generation. Doing no planning or choosing to avoid the issues involved almost always leads to disastrous results. However, less than 40 percent of agricultural businesses have a succession plan. What’s the hold up?
Logic would suggest that developing a succession plan would be an obvious step toward transferring management and business ownership. However, complex forces are at work and, despite recognizing the importance of a plan, most farm owners and managers decide to do nothing about succession.

* Farm and ranch families experience stress from a wide variety of factors, including: 1. Operational stressors, 2. Environmental influences, and 3. Family stressors. Most factors are out of the families’ control, potentially adding even more stress.
