The Most Important Component of a Legacy

Values and life lessons has been identified as the most important component of a complete legacy. This is made up of 3 separate components, including Family Traditions, Family History and Beliefs.

Family traditions consist of religious, cultural and as well as family traditions handed down through generations. Traditions can help families improve communication, learn to value time spent together and celebrate each other’s achievements. All of which can help families get through tough times and changes.

Family histories may not include anyone famous, or infamous. However, they are of great value to the family, no matter what the tale. Many great stories can be found or shared that can bring a family’s history to life. Look for ways to preserve your own and your family’s history through books, audio or video recordings, etc.

Beliefs: A person’s beliefs are very important because those beliefs define the limit of that person’s experience. A person’s belief system is the set of precepts by which they live daily life and that govern their thoughts, words, and actions.

Taken together these create a person’s legacy. When a family identifies these for each other and themselves, they begin to define their own legacy. This legacy can live on and serve as inspiration and guidance for future generations.

Does Disrespect Belong in an Ag legacy?

We all feel slighted when we’re not given the respect we feel we deserve. On the other hand, willingly subjecting yourself to disrespect can cause plenty of problems, such as poor self esteem and create an anger-bomb. It is even more difficult when it is a family member sending you the negativity.

We can choose to help diffuse a situation or make it worse. We can work to stay in control and help break the cycle.

First, don’t personalize the negativity. While the other person may try to make it all about you, remember, it’s about them.

Sometimes simply ignoring the comments can be an effective strategy. Avoid dropping to their level or engaging in their negativity.

Other times you may need to engage a person who is acting disrespectful; you need a strategy to keep yourself from being sucked into the negativity. For help, see the AGLEGACY Newsletter “Does Disrespect Have A Place in Your Ag legacy?”

Disrespect in Your Ag legacy?

Disrespect is a lack of respect or courtesy. In relationships it can be more complex than that. Where some forms of disrespect are more subtle, that does not mean they are less destructive.

Controlling how we react towards someone who is being disrespectful can help us stay in control while helping to break the cycle. We can choose to help diffuse a situation or make it worse.

Kindness always prevails over negativity, just as darkness cannot thrive where light is present. We all need this reminder sometimes and expressing it out loud can be very powerful.

You may find that you are the one being disrespectful after thinking things through. How do you handle that?

Times of change and uncertainty can increase feelings of frustration, helplessness, insecurity, and vulnerability, and can trigger disrespectful behavior. These emotions can surface quickly when families are discussing succession of the family farm or ranch.

Coping with Excessive Stress?

AgLegacy_IMAGE

STRESS is our bodies’ natural reaction to a demand or “stressor.” Much short-term stress can be positive: it motivates us to succeed with a challenge. But long term stress can be harmful to your health. A rural lifestyle may bring with it stressors of isolation, financial worries, and factors that are out of the control of the farmer/rancher such as weather, market prices, etc. Combined, these stressors place people at a greater risk for chronic stress, making it hard for them to move forward to positive solutions.
If an individual or family member is unwilling to take the initiative, or if there might be some danger if quick action is not taken, you may want to take the lead. Ask for permission to contact an agency or community resource; then get in touch, share your concern and discuss how the office will respond to this referral.

Helping agriculture nurture its legacy . . .
A legacy is the summation of a lifetime of achievement and the context in which that lifetime will be remembered. A legacy is not just money but a reputation, what was accomplished, and the difference a person makes in the world as they pass through.
